Apple Blossoms

Some days are just too incredible to believe . . .

Apple trees in bloom, near The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Lantern below, were the entrance into an enchanted world. Slip in between the pines and take a look –

The Human Experience

Recently I watched the movie, The Human Experience. This is a remarkable film that addresses the profound questions most of us grapple with, because we are human; Who am I? Why am I here? What does it mean to be a human being? What is the meaning of life?

In the film, which is a true story, two brothers in their twenties dive into life. Although they come from an abusive home, they know that their difficult childhood does not determine who they are nor who they can become.

So they embark on a new journey. They live on the streets of New York with the homeless. They travel to Peru to surf for charity and to work with abused and disabled children. Finally they travel to Africa to visit a leper colony.

It is through their journeys that they meet and develop deep relationships with those who are different from themselves. They allow themselves to be opened and changed by those they meet. They listen and learn how a lack of material things doesn’t diminish one’s happiness and joy in life – quite the reverse. They watch and see how suffering, when it occurs, is used to bring hope rather than despair – that in fact, despair and depression are illnesses – not the result of suffering.

In their travels the brothers learn that moving lightly on the earth places the focus squarely on others – where it needs to be. A small suitcase is all we need. Cocooning ourselves in large homes, trailers or a “home on wheels” insulates us from others, from relationships and from experiencing life as it really is.

Rather, when we connect with others in deep, healthy relationships we become all that we are meant to be.

This film underscores the joy of life and, that regardless of our circumstances, each unique life is of value, it is worth plunging into, and it is a gift.

Everyone should see this film.

The movies, Motorcycle Diaries and Celebrate What’s Right With the World by Dewitt Jones are other powerful films that examine core questions about life and who we are.

Art In Bloom

Interested in going someplace fun and creative this weekend? Consider the Minneapolis Institute of Arts “Art in Bloom” Exhibit beginning Friday, April 28 – Sunday, May 1. Usually art imitates life – but here life imitates art! Although the floral arrangements are certainly art too.

You will be caught up in a feeling of spring for the time you are there. The arrangements are so clever, colorful and inspirational. Watch a flicker slide show of some of the amazing displays here. Or take a look at pictures from last year below.

Romantic Living Room Inspiration

This is in fact my 100th post on this blog. Amazing!

So I will use it somewhat frivolously posting romantic living room inspiration pictures.

These rooms have a few problems. What they are missing is a lived-in look. Except for the last one which is a bit too cluttered, mainly due to the textured rug and wallpaper. Unfortunately, these pictures tell me little about who might live in these rooms. For the most part, they are too sterile. Not very complex. But they are a start. Another problem is that the furniture is single purpose. Single-use items are not at all useful in our small townhouse.

Who lives in these rooms? Check out Catalog Living and read about Gary and Elaine who live there ;-D

Here’s what I like about these rooms – they have lots of light and a casual summer feel – appealing when living in Minnesota. Also I see textures and layers including off-white cotton throws, sheer linen window coverings, pillows, layered rugs including oriental rugs. These rooms are small, like mine. Medium, rustic wood tones and wicker provide some depth and texture along candles and of course, books.

Most of these elements I already have. Re-arranged, can I use what I have to incorporate these elements into my own home – but with a little more personality (i.e “pop”), depth and function? Plus, whatever I do, it will have to flow with the rest of the space and with other items I have. We’ll see.
